Crater Lake

Welcome to the adventure of a lifetime! Spend nine days camping, hiking and geologizing amidst the breathtaking splendor of Crater Lake National Park...and earn a Discipline Studies-Science Lab while you are at it.

What: G161 - Landscape Evolution (3 credits)

Where: Camping at Broken Arrow Campground. Hiking and geologizing at Crater Lake, Mt. Bailey, Mt. Thielsen, Diamond Lake, etc.

When:

  • Evening lectures on Bend Campus (MSC 250) on June 20, and July 10 -11, from 6pm to 8pm.
  • Depart at 5pm on Wednesday, July 12 from COCC Science Center for Broken Arrow Campground.
  • Camping, hiking and geologizing from evening of July 12 through July 20.
  • Return to COCC Science Center the evening of July 20.

Who: You! Seriously, this class is for EVERYONE. If you have never gone hiking, sign up and we will help you get comfortable hiking in the mountains. If you have never taken a field science class like geology or ecology, sign up and we will help you develop the fundamental skills of observing the natural world. If you have never gone camping, sign up and we will teach you how to set up a tent and stay comfortable whatever the weather may bring.

Why: Because learning science outdoors is fun. In just under two weeks, you will earn a DIscipline Studies Science Lab (required for an Associate’s Degree at COCC), but more importantly, you will immerse yourself in a supportive, challenging experience. Past students have described this class as a life-changing experience, and indeed many have gone on to successful careers in geology and other field sciences.

What else do I need to know?

  • COCC Geology will supply food and transportation, and we have reserved a group site at Broken Arrow Campground.
  • Meals will be communal, with options for all dietary needs.
  • COCC Geology will supply tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads and backpacks if you do not
have your own.  Do not let a lack of gear stop you, we will make sure you can participate.
  • COCC Geology will supply all necessary group gear, including a fully stocked camp kitchen.
  •  All you need to bring is clothing, the spirit of adventure, and a desire to learn what the heck “geologizing” is all about.
