Dia de los Muertos Celebrations on Three Campuses!
Sugar Skull Cookie Decorating and Potluck
Tuesday, November 1, noon - 1 pm, Multicultural Center, 217 Coats Campus Center, Bend
Join the Latino club to learn more about Dia de los Muertos through crafts, and making
some traditional food. Feel free to bring a dish to share but we will have some snacks.
Day of the Dead Musical Presentation
Wednesday, November 2, noon - 1 pm, Wille Hall, Coats Campus Center, Bend
Miguel de Alonso will play guitar and Billy Mickelson will play cello while Yolanda
Alicia interprets Mexican folksongs with introductions for each song. Her anecdotes
will give some historical and cultural background that ties to the subject of grief,
celebration and honoring the ancestors . She will explain some of the key objects
that contribute to a Dia de los Muertos altar. She will point out that Dia de los
Muertos has its roots in Mexico and that it is NOT a "Mexican version of Halloween.

Join the Latino club to learn more about Dia de los Muertos through crafts making
and and watching the movie, The Book of Life. Feel free to bring a dish to share but we will have some snacks.

Bridging Differences in a New Culture: An Immigrant's Journey
Friday, November 4, 6 pm, Wille Hall, Coats Campus Center, Bend
Join us for an evening with award-winning author, poet, activist and teacher, Chitra
Banerjee Divakaruni. She will speak on how her emigration from India to the United
States turned her into a writer as she tried to make sense of the very different world
in which she found herself. She will share her immigrant experience through the themes
found in her books: loneliness, the desire to conform, the excitement of a new country,
acts of racism, loss of family and new possibilities as a woman.
Free to COCC students and staff; Tickets for $10 on sale for the general public at

November is Native American Heritage Month!
Making Moccasins
Thursday, November 3, 10 am - 2 pm, Multicultural Center, 217 Campus Center, Bend
Geraldine Jim will be teaching how to make moccasins. You do not need to attend the
entire time. This is a potluck so please bring something to share, if you can. All
materials are provided and space is limited to 10. Contact Gina Ricketts if youre

Book Discussion of Louise Erdrich's book, La Rose

Film: We Are All Related Here

This award winning film documents the story of the Yup'ik people of Newtok, Alaska,
who are being forced to relocate their village due to the erosion and flooding they
are experiencing as a result of global warming.
Everything You Wanted To Know About Indians But Were Afraid To Ask *
Wednesday, November 16, 6:30 pm, Wille Hall, Coats Campus Center, Bend Campus
Ojibwe scholar and cultural preservationist, Dr. Anton Treuer, will give a presentation
based on his book, Everything You Wanted to Know About Indians But Were Afraid to Ask. Dr. Treuer has dedicated his life to helping redefine the image of Native Americans
for non-Natives. Join us to learn more about Dr. Treuer's work and Native American
culture and hear him recount many of the questions he's been asked - from thoughtful
to funny to offensive - and his candid and personal responses.

Revitalizing Culture Through Language *
Thursday, November 17, 4:30 6:30 pm, Community Room, Madras Campus
Native language scholars, Dr. Anton Treuer and Jefferson Green, will discuss the importance
of native language preservation. They will present the background and history of their
respective languages and talk about their efforts and experiences with language preservation.
Free and open to the public.
