The F-Word: Stories of Forgiveness Banner Exhibit
January 17-27, 2017, COCC Barber Library, Rotunda
Stories of Forgiveness exhibition is a thought provoking collection of arresting images and personal narratives
exploring forgiveness in the face of atrocity. The Forgiveness Project uses the real
stories of victims and perpetrators to explore concepts of forgiveness, and to encourage
people to consider alternatives to resentment, retaliation and revenge. First launched
in London in 2004, it has since been displayed in over 550 venues worldwide. The exhibition
examines forgiveness as a healing process, a path out of victimhood and, ultimately,
a journey of hope. Videos featuring stories from The Forgiveness Project will also be shown.
Co-sponsored by COCC, The Forgiveness Project http://theforgivenessproject.com/ and the Interfaith Network of Central Oregon (INCO) https://sites.google.com/view/interfaithnetwork/home

Irresistible Justice: Cultivating Joy as a Pathway to Equity a film and dialogue session
Shakti Butler, Ph.D., Filmmaker and Racial Justice Educator
January 24, 2017, 6-8:30 p.m., Wille Hall, COCC Bend Campus
Using clips from her groundbreaking film, Cracking the Codes: The System of Racial Inequity, Dr. Shakti Butler will discuss the system of racialization through a holistic framework.
She will offer an explanation of these systems that promotes a union between the head
and heart. Dr. Butler teaches that it is the head that recognizes, analyzes and strategizes
to overcome disparities, and the heart obliterates fear and connects people with others.
Through thoughtful dialogue with a focus on understanding how white privilege is manifested
in all our institutions, Dr. Butler will lead us on a path to begin to see and deconstruct
racial identity.
Strategic Questioning for Social Change: A Workshop on Tools to Address Inequity
Shakti Butler, Ph.D., Filmmaker and Racial Justice Educator
January 25, 2017, 9 11:00 a.m. Wille Hall, COCC Bend Campus
Dr. Butler will engage us in a dialogue about justice and introduce the technique
of strategic questioning to create knowledge that awakens possibilities of change.
Using examples of inequities within our own community, we will apply this process
to address these important issues from multiple perspectives. This workshop will foster
a deeper understanding of systemic injustice and provide a structural lens that encourages
dialogue and community action.
About Butler: Founder and President of World Trust, Shakti Butler, Ph.D. is a multiracial
African American woman (African, Arawak Indian, and Russian-Jewish) whose work as
a creative and visionary bridge builder has challenged and inspired learning for over
two decades. She is the producer and director of several acclaimed documentaries.
Her newest film, Cracking the Codes: The System of Racial Inequity, uses interviews, story, theater and music to illuminate the larger frame of structural
and systemic racial inequity.
Community Book Conversations Racism Without Racists: Color-Blind Racism and the Persistence of Racial Inequality
in America by Eduardo Bonilla-Silva.
January 17 February 28, various dates and location.
Several community organizations are joining COCC and Building Common Ground in hosting
book conversations on Racism Without Racists: Color-Blind Racism and the Persistence of Racial Inequality
in America by Eduardo Bonilla-Silva. The conversations will span a period of four - six weeks beginning on the dates
and times listed here: https://www.cocc.edu/mcc-events/. To join in this community-wide conversation, choose a group that works for you and
register with the organizer of that group discussion. Books are available at local
book stores, online, and at public libraries. We hope you will join in this powerful
exploration of stereotypes and advance our understanding of how to work for social
justice in our community.
Amazon.com provides this description of the book:
Beneath our contemporary conversations about race lies a full blown arsenal of phrases,
arguments, and stories that account for racial inequalities. Eduardo Bonilla-Silvas
acclaimed Racism without Racists documents how whites use these to account for and
ultimately justify those inequalities. This provocative book explodes the belief that
America is now a color-blind society.
