LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS
Wednesday, February 3, 1 3 pm, Residence Hall Kitchen
Learn how to make Chinese dumplings!
Monday, February 8, 11 am 3 pm, Campus Center Dining Room and Multicultural Center
Celebrate Lunar New Year with a traditional Lion Dance in the dining room and then
learn more about the holiday with David Liu in the Multicultural Center at 2 pm.
LGBTQ SAFE ZONE TRAINING for Students *
Friday, February 26, 9 am - 4 pm
Safe Zones are confidential and safe environments for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender,
and queer (LGBTQ) individuals. This program offers education for our campus community
on how to create a safer, more respectful environment for LGBTQ students and colleagues.

2016 SEASON OF NONVIOLENCE
Our annual Season of Nonviolence is dedicated to the work for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Cesar Chavez, and Chief Wilma Mankiller. Please join us in honoring their work of advocacy for social justice and nonviolent change. All events are free and open to the public.
Community Book Conversations *
Several community organizations are joining COCC and Building Common Ground in hosting
book conversations on Claude M. Steeles Whistling Vivaldi: How Stereotypes Affect Us and What We Can Do. The conversations will span a period of four - six weeks beginning on the dates
and times listed below. To join in this community-wide conversation, choose a group
that works for you and register with the organizer of that group discussion. Books
are available at local book stores, online, and at public libraries.
We hope you will join in this powerful exploration of stereotypes and advance our
understanding of how to work for social justice in our community. For the most up

Book Conversations Celebration: A Community United Against Racism

How Much Inequality is Acceptable? A Conversation with Julia Hammond *

Inequality seems a natural consequence of rewarding excellence and innovation in a
capitalist economy. But the level of inequality changes with the times. Some economists
have recently suggested that we, in America, are now living with the largest income
gap in the history of the world. In this conversation, writer and educator Julia Hammond
will explore our beliefs and values around income inequality. Is it an incentive for
hard work and invention, an acceptable part of community life? Or does that story
no longer make sense? At what point, if ever, is the gap too large?
Julia Hammond, owner of Folklala and Oregon Humanities Conversation Project Leader,
will lead participants in a conversation around these questions.

As the Sikh community in Oak Creek, Wisconsin prepares for Sunday prayers, a deadly
hate attack shatters their lives, but not their resilience. This film was produced
in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Justice COPS Office as part of the Not
In Our Town: Working Together for Safe, Inclusive Communities Initiative.
Film: The Cherokee Word for Water *
Monday, February 22, 3 4:30 pm, Community Room, Madras Campus
Wednesday, Feb. 24, 3 - 5 pm, Hitchcock Auditorium, 201 Pioneer, Bend Campus
The Cherokee Word for Water is a feature-length motion picture that tells the story
of the work that led Wilma Mankiller to become the first modern female Chief of the
Cherokee Nation.

Lactation Spaces on Campus
Room 226 in the library.
Ask for the lactation room key/fob at the circulation desk located near the front
door of the Barber Library. Room 226 is a staff conference room that may be used for
lactation needs when not in use. It is available until 6 pm Monday through Thursday
and until 5 pm on Fridays.
Grandview 2nd floor bathroom/shower next to the regular bathrooms.
Ask for a key from the Math Department office on the second floor of Grandview or
the Business and Aviation Department office on the first floor of Grandview from 8
am 5 pm (offices are closed during the lunch hour and on weekends and during the summer
months.)
