Upcoming Programs and Events for 2020
Season of Nonviolence
The Season of Nonviolence honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mahatma
Gandhi, Cesar Chavez, and Wilma Mankiller and their nonviolent work to advocate for
human rights.
Book Discussions: COCC and other community organizations are hosting book conversations on Ijeoma Oluo’s New York Times Best-Seller So You Want to Talk About Race. Oluo guides readers through various topics in an attempt to invite folks from all identities to engage in conversations about racism, discrimination, intersectionality and more. Her honest and constructive approach facilitates difficult conversations through engagement and dialog.

The August Wilson Red Door Project and the COCC Afrocentric Studies Club Present:
Evolve, a new performance experience that explores the relationship between law enforcement
and communities of color. March 13 and 14, Tower Theater, 7:00 p.m.
Program Highlights
The Good Road (a COCC college-prep class for Native high school students); Students participated in a day-long workshop to learn more about Celilo Falls. During the interactive and inspiring session, students created artwork inspired by the falls, learned about the forces leading to the loss of Celilo, and explored the resiliency of the tribes that relied on this important place.

Cultural Resources
"History of LGBTQ" Radio Show: Polish up your Polari and uncover the secrets and codes that help tell the history of the LGBTQ community. Featuring comedian Suzie Ruffell and historian Dr. Justin Bengry.
"Harriet Tubman" Radio Show: Greg Jenner is joined by comedian Desiree Burch and historian Dr. Michell Chresfield to take a look into the life of the American hero and abolitionist, Harriet Tubman.
"Latino Rebels- The Battle of 187" Podcast: Gustavo Arellano, the former editor of the OC Weekly and author of the syndicated column, "Ask a Mexican", has recorded a podcast about the history of the defeat of a anti-immigrant proposition 187. It is an inspirational story due to the passion of students that swayed the vote.
