Information and Events for April 2016
Transgender Day of Visibility
Thursday, March 31, 4 5:30 pm, 155 Boyle Education Center
International Transgender Day of Visibility is an annual holiday occurring on March
31 dedicated to celebrating transgender people and raising awareness of discrimination
faced by transgender people worldwide. COCC will observe this day with a panel presentation
of individuals who will share their personal experiences and offer ways to become
an ally for transgender issues.
Whos Occupying Whom? A Conversation with Dr. Cornel Pewewardy
Tuesday, April 5, 6:30 8:30 pm, Trinity Episcopal Church, 231 NW Idaho, Bend
Dr. Cornel Pewewardy, Professor and Director of the Indigenous Nations Studies Program
at Portland State University, will talk about the skirmishes between colonizers featured
in the recent militia occupation in Burns, Oregon.
Cultural Diversity Workshops with Sonya Littledeer (for students only)
Fridays, April 8, April 29, and May 12, 9 am - 1pm
This three-part 12 hour training (which can also be taken as a one-credit HD 199 course)
explores the topics of diversity, cross cultural communication, power, and privilege.
This is an excellent class for future teachers, health care workers, leaders or students
who intend to work in a global environment. Space is limited to 20 students and breakfast

Sojourners, Settlers, and New Immigrants: Mexicanos in Oregon
Thursday, April 14, 4:30 pm, 155 Boyle Education Center
Erlinda Gonzales-Berry, author of Mexicanos in Oregon and professor and Chair in the
Department of Ethnic Studies at Oregon State University, will discuss a part of Oregons
history that does not often get taught.
Latin@ Fiesta
Friday, April 15, 6 - 9pm, Coats Campus Center
Food, Latin music, bouncy houses, photo booth, fun and so much more! This will be
fun for the whole family and we ask for donations for scholarships for Latino Club
students.
Dentalium Necklace Making
Friday, April 22, 11 am 2 pm, Multicultural Center, 217 Coats Campus Center, Bend
Vickie Franklin will teach a class on making dentalium necklaces. All materials will
be provided and the event is free. Bring a potluck dish to share for lunch.
2016 CAN WE TALK ABOUT RACE.....AND OTHER DIFFERENCES? SERIES
When to Call Out, and When to Call In
Redmond: Tuesday, April 12, 3 4 pm, Room 306, Building 3
Bend: Thursday, May 12, noon - 1pm, Multicultural Center, 217 Coats Campus Center
What should we do when we encounter oppressive language and behavior from our friends,
family members, colleagues, and classmates? This interactive conversation explores
the differences between "calling out" bad behavior and "calling in," a more compassionate
and inclusive approach to holding someone accountable for their words and actions.

This discussion will explore how our underlying cultural beliefs about age, gender,
and religion can influence our voting decisions. Facilitated by Lura Reed
Beyonc, Barack, and Keanu: Racial Hybridity and When is Enough, Enough?
Bend: Wednesday, April 20, 3 4 pm, Multicultural Center, 217 Coats Campus Center
Redmond: Thursday, May 19, 1:30 2:30 pm, Room 306, Building 3
Racial hybridity refers to the mixing of multiple racial backgrounds in a single person's
experience. Let's talk about how mixed and multicultural human diversity is impacting
our understanding of race today, especially as we consider what it means to have just
one drop of "other." Facilitated by Elizabeth Parks.
Rethinking Columbus: The Next 500 Years

Join us in a presentation and discussion as we re-evaluate the social consequences
of the Europeans arrival upon North America and whether or not we should honor Columbus
with a national holiday. Facilitated by Gina Ricketts.

Enjoy a fun, interactive game that will help us think about cultural differences and
how they influence our ability to be successful. Facilitated by Courtney Snead.
Diversity Achievement Award
The Campus Diversity Committee is pleased to announce the call for nominations for
the annual Diversity Achievement Award. Any staff or faculty who is currently employed,
or any student who is enrolled in at least 6 units is eligible to be nominated as
an individual or team for the Diversity Achievement Award. Nomination forms must
be submitted to the Diversity Award Selection Committee in care of Christy Walker,
Director, Diversity and Inclusion, 216 Campus Center by Friday, April 22, 2016. Nomination letters should address the nominees achievements in one of these four
areas:
Criteria: (Nominee(s) may satisfy one or more of the following criteria.)
A. Nominee (individual or team) actively promotes the recruitment and retention of
diverse groups to faculty, staff, administrative positions, and the student body (above
and beyond their normal job duties and/or student obligations.)
B. Nominee (individual or team) works to bring enriching cultural and educational
events to campus.
C. Nominee (individual or team) demonstrates efforts to create a climate of respect
and understanding among staff, faculty, students, and/or the community at large.
D. Nominee (individual or team) is active in community service, on- and/or off-campus,
that serves diverse populations.
