GETTING STARTED WITH DIGITAL ACCESSIBILITY

ACCESSIBILITY GUIDES BY TOOL

Explore our tutorials and resources on how to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards when working in specific tools and software.

10 STEPS CLOSER TO WCAG 2.1 AA

Color:

  1. Colors used must be dark or light enough to contrast against their background. (The official ratio is 4.5:1; use a tool like the WebAim Contrast Checker to verify.)
  2. Don’t rely on color alone to communicate important information.

Text Formatting:

  1. Use underlining only for links - highlight important points in other ways, like bolding or italics.
  2. Set all fonts to 9pt or larger.
  3. Whenever possible, use a sans serif font like Arial, Aptos or Calibri.

Images:

  1. Position images in Word documents so they are “In Line with Text" - not off to the left or right with text wrapping around them.
  2. Images should have desciptions (either as alt text or in an accompanying paragraph) that shares the context or purpose of the image.

Headings and Readability:

  1. Include at least one Heading 1 in documents and subsequent headings (H2, H3, etc.) if it is three pages or longer.
  2. Use the Reading Order tool in PowerPoint to check that your slides are 'read' correctly.

Audio and Video:

  1. Use a media player that supports closed captions and allows playback to be stopped and started by the viewer.
