Information and Events for May 2017
Office of Diversity and Inclusion collaborates with the Deschutes Public Library on
their annual A Novel Idea event:
Book Discussion on Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
Tuesday, May 2 at 4 pm, Multicultural Center, 217 Campus Center, Bend Campus
Homegoing follows the paths of two sisters - one sister is sold into slavery and taken from
the Gold Coast to the plantations of Mississippi and the other sister marries an English
man and remains in Ghana. Yaa Gyasis novel then weaves the descendants of the two
sisters through eight generations and illuminates slaverys oppressive legacy both
for those who were taken from and those who remained in Ghana.
Film and Discussion: Birth of a Movement
Wednesday May 3, 4:00 p.m.

Based on Dick Lehr's book The Birth of a Movement: How Birth of a Nation Ignited the Battle for Civil Rights, the documentary Birth of a Movement tells the story of William M. Trotter, Boston-based African American newspaper editor
and activist. In 1915 Trotter waged a crusade against D.W. Griffiths technically groundbreaking
but notoriously Ku Klux Klan-friendly, The Birth of a Nation, igniting a battle still raging today about race relations, media representation,
and the power and influence of Hollywood.
Film and Discussion: 13th
Tuesday, May 9, 4pm, 155 Boyle Education Center, Bend Campus
13th, nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2017, explores reasons
behind the mass incarceration of African Americans and Latinos. The director, Ava
Du Vernay, demonstrates that the legacy of slavery stills exists in practices embedded
in the current criminal justice system. She specifically examines the prison industrial
complex illustrating how corporations are benefitting from incarceration. The film
gets its name from the Thirteenth Amendment in the United States Constitution which
ended slavery and freed all slaves in the US.
Drag Party!
Friday, May 5, 4 pm, Wille Hall, Coats Campus Center, COCC Bend Campus
Come as the most fabulous version of yourself! Join COCCs LGBTQ and Ally Club for
the first ever Drag Party. Everyone is invited to participate. Dress in drag or your
best attire. There will be music, dancing, food, and games.
Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Festival
Saturday, May 7, 1 - 4 pm, Coats Campus Center, COCC Bend Campus
Enjoy performances, cultural crafts for children, local artists and businesses, and
delicious cuisine. Free and open to the public.
Safe Zone Workshop for Students
Friday, May 19, 9 am - 4 pm
Safe Zones are confidential and safe environments for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender,
and Queer (LGBTQ) individuals. This program offers education for our campus community
on how to create a safer, more respectful environment for LGBTQ students and colleagues.
