As a new faculty member, you may have some questions regarding procedures, etc. We have compiled a list of FAQs new faculty members might have. If you need additional information, please contact the support departments listed on the Essential Contacts page.
- How long does it take to complete the required learning activities?
This will vary depending on your experience in teaching and using Canvas. Please expect approximately two hours of reading for each Part One and Part Two, not including the time to create and upload your course syllabus in your course.
- Who will be at the Resource Fair?
You will be able to meet and ask questions from the following departments:
- Admissions and Records

- Where should I park?
The easiest places to park will be the lot in front of Newberry Hall - Lot C1 on the map linked below - or the Library main lot (Lot D4) which is directly across the road from Cascades Hall.
- What should I bring with me?
If you will be spending the majority of your time creating instructional content on a personal device, we recommend you bring that device with you.
Otherwise, we will have a laptop cart available as well as everything else you'll need!
- How am I paid for completing the Orientation?Part time faculty are eligible for compensation for time spent completing the Orientation components. For each of the three components completed, you'll be paid $50 (for up to $150 total), which will be included in your last paycheck of the term.
- What if I can't attend the Resource Fair?
While we'll miss seeing you in person, please do complete the first two components of the Orientation! Any specific questions you have after completing those lessons can be directed at the appropriate department contact.

- How do I access and customize my Canvas courses?Your Canvas courses are available at .
eLearning is available to assist faculty in accessing and developing their Canvas courses. The eLearning Office is located in the Bend Campus Library building, room LIB008. Make an appointment at or 541-383-7785 for in-person meeting, over the phone, or by Zoom.
- How do I order books for my class?Please contact your department admin assistant. You may also visit the COCC Bookstore website to see the textbook information already ordered for your class.
- How do I learn how to develop and/or conduct an online class?A session of COCC's Online Teaching Certification Course (the OTC) is held each term on Canvas. Successful completion of this course is required before instructors teach a 100% online course at COCC. Interested faculty can register on the OTC Information page.
- How can I request a classroom change?For all classroom changes and reservation requests, please contact your department admin assistant. It’s best to check your classroom assignment as far in advance of the start of the term as possible.
- Do I have to hold office hours?All instructors are required to hold office hours weekly. Office hours should be posted on the class syllabus on Canvas. For more information, please contact your department chair/admin assistant.
- What information am I required to include in my syllabus?All instructors are required to provide an accurate syllabus to their students. For more information, visit Instructional Resources Syllabus Template page.
- When do I get to hold my final exam?The final exam schedule is posted on the Academic Calendar and Exam Schedule page and must be strictly adhered to.
- What do I do if a student needs tutoring?Free tutoring services are available for our students at each campus and via Zoom. Refer your students to the Tutoring Locations website for more information.
- One of my students has informed me they need accommodations for a disability – how
does this work?Students seeking accommodation must register with the Disability Services Office. They are located in Bend Campus Library building, room LIB010. Refer student to their website or contact then at 541-383-7583 or disabilityservices@cocc.edu.
- What non-academic resources are there for students in need?Through a partnership with community agencies and organizations, COCC offers resources to our students. Visit the Student Resources page to access the resources available.
- One of my students needs an extension beyond the end of term. What do I do?Reading the Grade Options and Policies page if the student meets eligibility requirements for an Incomplete grade. If they do, and you are willing to issue the student an Incomplete, fill out the Incomplete Grade Contract.
- How should I handle a disruptive student in my class?If an incident is currently in progress, contact Campus Safety at (541) 383-7272. To report incidents which are not currently in progress, file an online report on the Campus Safety page. The online reporting should not be used in an emergency. If your incident is an emergency, dial 9-1-1.
- How do I know what holidays the college is closed?All scheduled closures are listed on the online Academic Calendar.
Note: In the event of a weather emergency, delays and closings will be posted at the top of the COCC homepage. Sign up for the COCC Alert on the Employee Login page to receive emergency notifications. - Who should I contact if I’m having issues with my office computer?Submit a ticket to the ITS Helpdesk. If you need immediate assistance, call the Help Desk at 541-383-7400 or email at ITHelpdesk@cocc.edu.
- How do I get my identification card?Visit the Welcome Center located in the Boyle Education Center in Bend Campus, or in the Redmond Technology Center in Redmond Campus, to have your photo taken and an ID printed.
- How can I obtain a parking pass?Contact your department admin assistant for information on how to obtain a parking sticker from the Campus Safety Office.
